Phone Call For You, The Name Of This Band Is Talking Heads

Hi, reader. I wrote this in 2011 and it's now more than five years old. So it may be very out of date; the world, and I, have changed a lot since I wrote it! I'm keeping this up for historical archive purposes, but the me of today may 100% disagree with what I said then. I rarely edit posts after publishing them, but if I do, I usually leave a note in italics to mark the edit and the reason. If this post is particularly offensive or breaches someone's privacy, please contact me.

So the next time I have a colleague who was born in 1990, I will wish to nickname them "Flood". This of course means that I should be nicknaming every colleague with an album title from the year they were born! 1979? "The Wall" or "London Calling." 1982? "Sonic Youth" or "Big Science" or ... see this blog entry's title.

Thoughts?

From henceforth I wish to be known as "Joni Mitchell's Blue."

So I guess I'm either "Revolver" or "Pet Sounds". Or maybe "The Monkees".

I am torn between "Dr. Heckle & Mr. Jive" and "The Colossus of Detroit".

1978's tricky. "You Can Tune A Piano, But You Can't Tuna Fish" contains an egregious pun, but on the other hand it's a bit too long for this. "Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!" is also a bit too long. "Dire Straits" is short, and I love me some Dire Straits, but feels too pretentious. And then of course there's "More Songs About Buildings and Food." I also love me some Talking Heads. But on the whole I think I'm gonna go with "This Year's Model."

Sonic Youth's first album is my age? Whoa.

If I were ever given the nickname Martin "Combat Rock" Marks, I would be a very happy man. But if I were going to be very accurate and insist on an album released on my birthday, I would have to go with the Stray Cat's Need for Speed or Chicago's Chicago 16, none of which really speak to me.

(P.S. Thank you, Wikipedia's "1982 in music" article.)
