houseplants, gardening and growing my own food

A Garden Dream: Yesterday, the day mom died, the radish seed Sienna brought home from her field trip sprouted. I have never had good luck growing things, even when we had a yard. We grew a few beans and tomatoes, but that’s about it.

Last night I had a dream. I was walking someone out to their car through my backyard, which was a garden. We ate heirloom tomatoes of different colors, and she helped me clean bugs and dirt off a watermelon (growing on the same vine as a pumpkin, very Minecraft) by sending Dalton inside for a paper towel. The garden was somewhat overgrown and I explained I hadn’t been outside since the previous Sunday because my week had been so busy.

I love the idea of growing my own food but I can’t keep so much as a houseplant or basil alive these days.

True Garden Success: The other day I took Maggie out to look at our garden before her nap. There were a couple green beans, so I picked one and ate it and she wanted some. She ended up eating all the green beans I could find on the bushes! That made me very happy.

[Comments] (2) Spring wants to come out: I took precautions to make sure I would be missing Mom this Spring.

[Comments] (5) : I've been trying to teach Maggie a few signs over the past two weeks. I think she understands them, but won't do them herself yet. I noticed that when I sign or say "sleep", she puts her finger to her mouth and blows on it. We figured out this is from a Wiggles song. "Now your bear's asleep, Shh, Shh, Shh."

Rachel: she is growing so fat

The daffodils are popping up everywhere, so pretty and yellow, making me miss Mom and wish I had planted some bulbs last fall. I definitely plan on doing so this year.

All the flowers: Would have very extra special powers/They would sit and talk to me for hours/When I'm lonely

I remembered why I like paperwhites so much- they're delicious smelling. Mine opened up two little blooms yesterday. I'm sad to be leaving them again. I tied a sparkly red ribbon around them so they could stand up straight. It's very pretty. Thanks, Mommy!

Also got sympathy flowers from work.

: My new spider plants are doing well. Thanks Rach. Actually, the one that survived the move is here at work and he is doing well also. They both seem to have grown a lot in the last week.

Basil Update #2: I have four remaining basil plants (I picked the rest out). They are over 1 foot tall and I have used the leaves in three things: BLTs, grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato-zucchini pasta. Very yummy. I'm glad we moved to a place where I could grow happy basil.

Basil Update: I have sprouts! I just peeked outside and there are little splotches of green things coming up in my pot. I think maybe I planted a lot of seeds...

[Comments] (4) Planted: John refuses to post a wishlist for his birthday (July 22nd!) so I am doing it for him. John would like: Wise and Otherwise, this cool game we played with Kristen and Aaron; Harry Potter 6; Rhoad Dahl books (in particular Matilda, The Witches, James and the Giant Peach, or The BFG); Robinsons-May gift card (new favorite store); digital camera (hahaha); plants.

We just bought a nice plant at Home Depot with a gift card John got from his brother. John loves plants now. It is a nice tall tropical tree thingy and it fills the corner between our bookshelf and our door perfectly. I also planted my basil but no sprouts yet. The plant I have from Grandpa's funeral did not do well on the deck. The leaves on one side were rapidly losing all their color and becoming limp. Not sure what could have caused this.

[Comments] (2) : Enrichment tonight was on gardening. I got to plant some seeds in a little egg shell and now I am looking online for ideas about growing things with no outside space. This is the best site I've found.

: I went out to the garden and picked four zucchinis, a cucumber and some strawberries. Two of the zucchinis weighed more than Jellybean. I had to throw them into the green waste bin. I get to go back to the dentist tomorrow, yay!

: By the way, in case you were worried, Spot isn't actually dead. He just looks like a dried up weed. However, I am determined to revive him. Poor Spot.

: I had the best weekend- I went up to Salt Lake and spend the whole time with my cutie little cousins and my cutie Mommy and my cutie Clark and his family. It was lots of fun. I got another plant. It is an oregano plant and it is named Rosalie, Rosie for short. It's not nearly as cute as Spot, who is still not showing improvment, but it tastes good. I need to get a bigger pot for it. I'm off to read journal article after journal article about attachment in infants.

: Spot does not appear to be doing well. Clark brought him back down here last Saturday and he didn't look like he had grown any while I was gone. Kirin thinks he needs more sunlight, so I've been opening the blinds each morning and setting him on the window sill, but the sun does not hit our apartment very well. He also appears not to be a flowering plant, but I love him just the same.

: I got a plant today. Its name is Spot. Clark brought it to me. They were having a "Plant a Flower" booth outside the WILK.
