Rituals & Security

Hi, reader. I wrote this in 2008 and it's now more than five years old. So it may be very out of date; the world, and I, have changed a lot since I wrote it! I'm keeping this up for historical archive purposes, but the me of today may 100% disagree with what I said then. I rarely edit posts after publishing them, but if I do, I usually leave a note in italics to mark the edit and the reason. If this post is particularly offensive or breaches someone's privacy, please contact me.

In May I'll be graduating with a master's. Commencement ceremonies will occur in the evening of Tuesday, May 20th for my program and in the late morning of Wednesday, May 21st for the university-wide hoopla. I haven't yet decided whether to attend just the School of Continuing Education one or both.

This will be about ten years after my high school diploma, and indeed I have been thinking about going back to Lodi and doing the ten-year Tokay reunion. I've even sent off a letter with my new address to the school so the reunion committee can track me down and tell me when it is.

My friend Ron characterized the ten-year reunion as the scoring line on a race: how far can you get in ten years? By the standard measures I've done very well. I've married an awesome guy, graduated (soon) from two prestigious universities, and started earning a very good salary. And that, as much as my emotional growth over the past ten years, is a reason I could go there without a bunch of anxiety.

It's curious. I think of incidents from high school that make my face hot, and then I think, "I'm probably making more than you." And if envy is green, then superiority is cool, blue water. I could drown in it.

recently I had the conversation of "would you go to your ten year reunion?" I said, "it depends on how successful I am." But, probably, I'll be in Serbia or somewhere.

When my own ten-year reunion comes around, I plan to charter a hot-air balloon to deposit me and three beautiful women (also chartered for the occasion) right on the front lawn of my high school. I will be wearing a bright blue tuxedo with six-inch lapels and wraparound shades encrusted with costume jewelery. Around my neck I will wear a giant letter "M" on a thick gold chain. I will claim that I am currently serving as prime minister and chief towel-boy to the Sultana of Brjzdekistan, when my duties as Jay-Z's ghostwriter permit. I will spend the entire evening pretending to field calls from celebrities on a borrowed iPhone, then leave at the stroke of midnight in a hybrid Jaguar E-Type.

I have a hard time remembering anyone from high school and also I don't live in the country anymore so when my reunion came around I didnt feel very compelled....then again I've not had quite the success that you've had. I think you should enjoy that high school reunion, you've done mighty well for yourself! I am really proud of you.
